Unlike mrvette, I want an older laptop.

I am looking to get a used laptop running Win 7 (or even XP). It needs Ethernet & USB ports and DVD (or even CD) player. I could install Linux on a functioning machine.
I need to display Java programs I have written & OpenOffice Impress animated slideshows on WiFi TVs. (I can get a USB dongle for WiFi).

I have no other need for a laptop, so cost is the constraining factor. This keep-myself-busy project has passed the proof-of-concept phase (my code works & I have working presentations). If I do not pursue the idea further, I don't want to "lose" much money.

Would you look at refurbished from Amazon, Newegg or elsewhere? Amazon resellers seem to have third-party one-year warranties.

Two years ago I needed an older laptop that had Windows XP. I had a special program that needed Windows XP. I got one on Craigs List for $40. It works fine for me.

I bought a refurbished slim factor workstation desktop for about $100, I've been using it as my media computer for a year or two now. Maybe buy something with enough power you could repurpose when you're done?

check microcenter and b&h.

Can you use a chromebook for your purposes? They're dirt cheap

I don't think OpenOffice runs on Chrome. It does not run on Android.

New laptops are dirt cheap at the entry level and the processors are lightning fast compared to earlier models. Is anything keeping you from a $300.00 new laptop and an older version of Windows?
