Toomer's Corner trees expected to die

Auburn, AL – Experts say new soil samples of the Toomer's Corner trees this week did not bring good news.

It seems the herbicide, Spike 80 DF, has traveled much deeper into the soil that experts had originally thought.

Scientists worked late night placing fresh soil under the trees.

Experts say they expected to see new growth, even with the poisoning.

By late April the new leaves should be big enough for experts to test to see if they are infected with the herbicide.

Harvey Updyke arrested by Auburn police for allegedly pouring the poison onto the trees shortly after the Iron Bowl.

He is out on bond and according to his attorney Updyke will be in back in court on April 20th for a probable cause hearing.

Its just a freaking game and people have to go all crazy and kill traditions. I actually feel bad for the Auburn fans. Kind of a weird tradition but tradition none the less.

I wonder what kind of punishment he will receive.

Why do people have to be so stupid?

Ya know, I can see pranks like stealing something and returning it or getting an opposing crowd to spell out something stupid in the stands, but that's not right.

This Auburn University graduate thanks you. I did notice.

If the chemicals went even deeper into the soil than previously thought, the EPA will have even more reason to pursue federal charges than they did before.

That is terrible.
Thanks for the info, and I agree if the trees are killed..there should be federal charges. That is part of our country, not just a mascot or something that can be replaced.

It's kind of a neat deal. After the game everybody gathers there and parties, even from the opposing team.
