I drive 175 miles a day to work, and the 2010 GMC Sierra Denali I have gets 19-20 mpg. I have been looking around at cars all winter trying to decide what would fit me, 6'4'', and my budget, (much smaller). I had been centered on sedans for the most part, but 2 weeks ago I remembered one of the cars my wife had back in the early or mid 80's which was a CRX Si, (that I fit in!).
Last Tuesday after work I paid a visit to a Honda dealership and tried out the new Civic coupe with the 1.5L Turbo and direct fuel injection. It is IMHO a great little car! We went and took delivery on it yesterday. It's black and fairly loaded with comforts for low $20k's.
The ride home on 50ish speed limit back roads netted me 42 mpg by the computer, but the big news is the way this drives and handles. It's a blast!
The photo is a grab off of the web. It's still raining out!
Anyone here have one of these and are you considering any performance upgrades in the future? I have a 120k bumper to bumper, but a cold air intake may not bother that?
I'm almost looking forward to going to work tomorrow!

Your gas savings alone, probably 4-5 gallons a day, will probably about cover about half the cost of the car. Nice color too :D

I've been driving an older Civic for a couple of years after years of putting gas in my 4x4 chevy pickup. I don't even think about the price of gas now.
The new ones are great looking and larger now as well. Good buy!

You've made a great choice. Honda's on average are bullet proof and will give you 200k easily with you taking care of it. Make sure to do your own math for MPG. The sister in law has a Prius. The computer shows higher MPG than pen to paper. Also, how much time does it take for your commute?

The wife and I have been leasing a Nissan Sentra for over a year now and are quite happy with it. Comfortable enough for long trips and we get 43 mpg on the highway.

I like the Honda Civic, nice car...:seasix:
Was looking at a Civic coupe to replace my Passat TDI. Ended up with a Grand Cherokee. Hope your Civic works out for you.

Just don't be tangling with any big rigs or pickups on the highway. :ack:

The only thing I don't like about the Sentra is if you have high cross wind you better hang on and pay attention. It does tend to move around a bit.

Honda engineering is second to none. You will enjoy many miles with your car and it will be reliable as sin. :seasix:

The commute time changes with the weather and daylight. Average for a nice day is 1hr 45min. In weather such as rain, fog, snow, ice, and the longest was 2-1/2 hrs. This is one way time. My route is 100% rural 2 lane. Speed limits range from 25-55 mph.
As soon as this breaks in a little, I'll keep track with actual millage and fuel used. I am used to the onboard systems and have always done my own math.
Today, instead of my first commute, I came down with bronchitis. The only trip I'm making is to go visit my doctor.
A big thank you for all of your positive comments! :seasix:

That is one shitty commute. Hope the job, and the pay, justify that commute.

I agree!
Since I lost my shop of 27 years in 2012 due to the budget sequestration, I've been looking for a home to spend the rest of my life at. This place is where I put my product line of "Xpandrel" which is a new type of expanding mandrel I invented in the early 90's. I accepted the position of VP last Fall, and I enjoy it so much, the drive to me is just time to catch up on XM Patriot channel!
The shop does some very interesting work, you can check it out. This is not a sales pitch, just thought you may find it unique. :cert:

the new Civic is quite a departure from what it had been.

BS
your shoe is bigger than that car.
Interesting thread. I bought a Chevy Cruze a few months ago, same idea, a good mileage beater to bop around in. Most of my driving has been mixed and I'm returning mid to high 30's. Car is very quiet, neutral steering, and more headroom than my Ram 2500. Surprising amount of features for an econobox. Push button start, heated seats, remote start, backup camera, etc.
The one thing I don't like about it is, it cuts the engine off at stoplights, and the only way to defeat that is to be very easy on the brake pedal. Takes practice.
