Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell triggered the so-called “nuclear option” shortly before noon today, ensuring Judge Neil Gorsuch’s confirmation to succeed the late Justice Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court.
Senate rules provide that 30 hours additional debate will take place before a final vote. Gorsuch is expected to be confirmed Friday evening.

My question: Why did the Republicans wait this long to invoke the Nuclear Option? It seems obvious that the Democrats were going to filibuster this nomination all along. Were the Republicans just being gentlemen, or are they just that naive?

Who knows
It is all a game....they don't care anything about the people in which they "represent"
In the meantime, while we were all "watching them" to make a decision on this, they were off passing other crap behind curtain #2.
Why do we keep them all in office?? Because they are good at distracting us until we have no other choice but to vote them back in again.

You can say that again. They are great at saying all the right reasons, once they walk away from the microphone all goes back to normal.

They thought Schumer would eventually buy a clue.
American politics today is like watching two runaway trains headed towards a head-on collision. Everyone involved knows what's coming, no one can do anything about it, and whatever actions are taken are taken too late to matter.

:iagree: It's pretty wild here right now.
a) it's not a rule, it's a precedent.
b) this precedent can only be challenged at certain times, such as happened today after a failed cloture vote, when the senate is in a non-debatable position.
c) majority does rule, so those guys/gals should get moving and use their power. the dems sure use whatever power they have when they have it. quit being scared of being in charge.

It was frist set in 1917 under Woodrow Wilson when he did not get his way and his Dem Senate changed the rules.
As Obama once said
"Elections have consequences" and "We won"
Karma is a bitch.

They had to wait until the democrats actually did invoke the (first ever) filibuster of a SC justice nominee. That's their reasoning as far as I can tell.

they had to get into a procedural place where they could have the chair rule, and then vote to overturn the chair's ruling. they couldn't just walk in one day and undo this.

Yeah, I'm watching golf today. Politics happens on its own, like poop. Golf, like quantum mechanics, requires an observer.

and as we know from last week's LGPA event, if observed too closely, you can affect the outcome.
isn't that right Mr. Heisenberg?

Why did that chick get a 4 stroke penalty, anyway ??

The technical answer is she failed to replace her ball on the same spot on the green after she marked and lifted it.
The real answer is some couch potato in ohio saw it on TV and phoned it in. They should not allow that.
So, two strokes for improper placement of the ball, and two strokes for signing an incorrect score card.

That was such bullshit, what happened to Lexi. Mark my words, they will change the rules so that armchair rules officials will not be able to do this.

marked a putt, cleaned the ball, replaced the ball, made the putt.
finished her round, signed the correct scorecard.
then someone calls in and says she didn't put the ball back correctly. they looked at the tape, agreed the caller was correct.
2 stroke penalty for improper ball placement, 2 stroke penalty for signing an incorrect scorecard (previously she would have been DQ'd).
if the playing partner and the walking official are ok with her actions, then that should be the end of it. no more armchair officials only picking on selected players.
