I'm sort of trying to figure out how to tell this story without it being drawn out. A couple of weeks ago, a young girl (22 yo) laid down at a rail crossing here in town and committed suicide by train. As it turns out, it was a former active duty airman that was in my shop while I was still in the guard. I didn't really know her well at all since I worked another shift, and probably only spoke to her in passing a few times.

That said, it became well known that her military career was going down the crapper in a hurry. Not showing up to work, late all the time etc. They did a commander directed drug test on her and she popped for meth. She then thought it was a good idea to have a loaded shotgun in her car and come to work, and I'm guessing tweaked to the hilt. Security Forces were waiting for her and off to jail she went. She ended up getting like 6-8 months confinement and I'm sure rehab along the way. Once her sentence was up, they shipped her back here for out processing, and put her out the gate. I had no clue she was even still in the area since she was from Washington state to the best of my knowledge. She was gone even before I retired last May.

It just makes you wonder how someone can dismantle their whole life in that short of time. I know addiction is a terrible disease, but damn......

James, that's messed up. People will get themselves into all kinds of situations as you well know. The only sanity you can get from this is knowing you've led troops down the right path a lot of times. Those that pick the wrong fork, well, that's on them. All the signs for the right path were there. You did all you could...I know you well enough for that to be a fact.

Her problems started way before she joined the service. She probably had some bad wiring, or bad parenting, or both.

I have known people that could have had the world by the tail. But they got hooked on drugs and went down hill from there.

:iagree:

My Brother put a gun to his head on his 30th birthday. Drugs screwed his life up so bad he felt cornered and thought it was the only way out.

Some folks are so consumed by the addiction, nothing else matters. :sadangel:

I do feel bad for the crew. The crossings had recently been redone, and the rails were even with the pavement, so she knew what she was getting. Not only did she end her life, but she had to involve someone else in her demise. The whole thing just weirded me out a little. When she first came to the unit, she seemed to have real promise, but it faded within months. Really, it is just hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that someone that young can unravel so quick. When I found out she had died, I thought OD immediately, having no idea she was the one on the tracks, since no name was released. It's sad either way. Some people just can't overcome their demons.:sadangel:
