LUBBOCK, TX – A massive bee attack in Lubbock's Rush neighborhood killed one beloved animal and critically injured two others around 10:45 this morning.

Firefighters told everyone in a two-block area around the 4600 block of 8th Street to stay inside while they tried to figure out where the bees were coming from.

Officials say the bee hive was located in a small shed in the back of a corner home, but they still don't know what disturbed the bees.

One miniature Schnauzer was killed. Firefighters say the dog had more than 100 bees on it when they arrived on the scene.

Melissa Stripling was stung several times while she tried to save her dog's life.

"My hands were numbing; my legs were numbing." Stripling said. "They were all over my hair. I was spraying anything I could find that would kill them because there were like 50 of them in the house."

Stripling says it was like something out of a movie when she looked in her backyard to find her dog being attacked by bees.

"I opened my curtains and I saw about 1000 bees all over and they were all over my puppies," Stripling said.

Another woman and her granddaughter were walking down the street when they were suddenly attacked.

"I said, 'Were being attacked by bees. Can we get in your car?'

Suzie Jones asked a stranger to drive her and her granddaughter home.

"Our little granddaughter began screaming bloody murder, and I looked and they were on her head," Jones said.

"I just started praying that God would help us I didn't know where we could go," Jones continued.

When firefighters arrived, they closed off the area to look for the source.

"The hive wasn't really visible because they were going in underneath a wall, " Fire Lt. Van O'Harrow said.

Stripling says even the EMS ran in fear of the bees.

"The bees started coming towards them, so they ran to their ambulance car in a rush."

Firefighters walked around with oxygen masks, and even the police stayed in their cars to avoid being stung.

"We told everybody to stay inside," Fire Lt. Van O'Harrow said.

But by then it was too late for Stripling's oldest dog Bella. She was killed in just 30 minutes.

"Bella was like our little daughter. She brought love and joy to our family,"Stripling said.

She holds on to the hope that her other two puppies, each with over 50 stings, will survive.

"The vet said they might not make it but they have a chance," Stripling said.

I ran over an underground hive of Yellow Jackets last summer with the lawnmower...got hit a few times and probably looked like I was trying out for the Special Olympics as I was running down my driveway frailing my arms all over the place swatting at them. I finally killed them and the hive later on.
