I know FL folks have seen more of these than cockroaches but it was still cool to have one swim up to our dock and hang out for a bit.
I didn't know they were this big. I usually see them swim in front of or near the boat. Summbitch must weigh 7-800 lbs.

They are protected and if you try to ride or disturb them in any way its a crime I believe a felony. A woman was prosecuted a few years ago for riding one and was fined 10.000 dollars if I remember correctly.

They also really like a fresh water hose.
Again illegal to interfere with them though.
I believe they will occasionally eat them still inn cuba.
Sea cow's is what they are called. We've seen them once in a while.

They are a protected species, but at least they're now off the endangered species list.

cool. my wife and i were sitting on a bench at a seawall once and unexpectedly, two manatees surfaced right in front of us. They looked like submarines. Watched them swim by and on up the river. Never forget that.

Manatee - Wikipedia
We've swam with them before on the Crystal River and Homasassa Springs (near Tampa) several years ago. In scuba gear we got into the water and just kinda floated there while they were in the area where people couldn't go.
A few wandered out towards us and got quite close. One couple did scratch them a bit (like giving a back scratch), and got some of the moss and stuff off them.
Very friendly, docile creatures. But if they ever decided to use their weight, you'd be in trouble. :)
We picked up this Wyland print after the encounter on our way back through Destin to go home...
