poisoned using oven as dryer

GREENSBURG, Pa. – A Pennsylvania housing agency has been found negligent for the carbon monoxide poisoning death of an elderly woman who used her open oven to dry clothing in 2013.

A family lawsuit claimed 77-year-old Sandra Troilo, of Monessen, died from carbon monoxide poisoning as a result of poor ventilation in her apartment.

A jury awarded Troilo's family more than $800,000 in damages on Thursday. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports damages will be capped at $250,000 under state law.

Troilo's family said energy efficient windows and a sealed door hampered the flow of air into the apartment. The family argued the Westmoreland County Housing Authority didn't follow regulations requiring it to maintain good air quality in the apartment.

The housing agency said the woman was responsible for her own death by misusing her gas oven.

Let me see if I have this right.

*get free housing from the taxpayers

*do something stupid

*old enough to know better

*sue the taxpayers

*profit

That about sum this up? Disgraceful. I'm guessing there were no actual taxpayers on the jury...they were probably all out working to pay for this woman's free apartment and couldn't get off work for jury duty.

I'm thinking the idea of some moron using an OVEN to dry their clothes wasn't exactly in the list of code requirements to design for when the apartments were built.

That family is a bunch of scumbags. :nutkick:

:iagree:

Absolutely. In life, they didn't care enough to take in granny. In death, they are grieving loved ones who can't wait to cash in.

I've heated a whole Victorian house/restaurant with the natural gas ovens to stop any damage to the pipes during an power outage. They stayed lit for two days with the oven doors open and fans off to keep the temp above freezing. The oven should burn clean enough not to poison any occupants......I'm still alive.
Faulty oven and NO vent I'm thinking. Landlord problem. :bilmem:
