I've been to and passed the Memorial many times. When passing the Arizona, ALL USN ships call attention and dip our flags. Every person that isn't on duty is on the deck, saluting.

Two thoughts, one historical, one current.
History: the attack was preceded by the US imposing an economic embargo on Japan. Economic warfare often precedes actual warfare.
Present: President Obama is "honoring" the event by giving part of our naval base on Okinawa back to Japan, free of charge. Had we waited a month and a half, that uber-expensive real estate might have been sold to Japan, a country that 1) can well afford it, and 2) a country that benefits from the military protection the US provides it.

I have been to Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona memorial. It is a solemn place that must be treated with honor and respect. May all men that died on that terrible day rest in peace and be blessed by God.:halfmast:

The primary reasons we imposed economic sanctions on our ally, Japan, prior to WWII were two fold.
1) Japan, emboldened by their win in WWI as our ally stepped up thier aggression in Asia thinking that thier "allies" were actually allies.
2) We dismantled our military after WWI to the point were the Polish army in 1939 was considered far superior to us, and they were.
When you mislead allies and then weaken your military you open yourselves to aggression and war.
