Canadian Police Will Punish Drunk Drivers by Making Them Listen to Nickelback
Cruel and unusual punishment, eh? Canadian authorities are cracking down on drunk drivers this holiday season in an unusual — but hilarious — way.
The Kensington Police Service said in a Facebook post on Saturday, November 26, that any residents who are caught drinking and driving will be forced to listen to the notoriously unpopular band Nickelback's 2001 album, Silver Side Up.
"So, the Holiday Season is upon us and that means more social events, staff parties and alcohol based libations," the police department wrote. "Now, Because of that fact, it logically means more people need to plan their nights driving duties. To save any problems at the end of the night, know ahead of time who is the Designated Driver.
"Now, with that being said, know that the Kensington Police Service will be out for the remainder of year looking for those dumb enough to feel they can drink and drive," the post continued. "And when we catch you, and we will catch you, on top of a hefty fine, a criminal charge and a years driving suspension we will also provide you with a bonus gift of playing the offices copy of Nickelback in the cruiser on the way to jail. Now, now, no need to thank us, we figure if you are foolish enough to get behind the wheel after drinking then a little Chad Kroeger and the boys is the perfect gift for you."
The Kensington Police Service accompanied the Facebook post with a photo of a Silver Side Up cassette (throwback!) in its original packaging. "So please, lets not ruin a perfectly good unopened copy of Nickelback," the police warned. "You don't drink and drive and we won't make you listen to it."
Constable Robb Hartlen, who wrote the post, later told CBC News that the law enforcement agency was simply trying to "put a little humor into a very serious matter of drinking and driving."
"Poor Nickelback," he added of the Canadian band. "They take the brunt of a nation's joke, and I'm sure they're crying all the way to the bank."
Hartlen also said he chose Nickelback because the band's lead singer, Chad Kroeger, was convicted of drunk driving in a British Columbia court in 2008.
