So I built a much bigger, faster, meaner mofo.

I7-6900K processor
128 GB DDR4 3300 ram
1 TB ssd os drive
28 TB additional internal storage
3 GeForce GTX 1070 video cards

currently 8 28" monitors, but video cards support 12 4k monitors, which I'll do in the next 3 months or so.

The power supply in the tower is 1,600 watts. I even have a 240 mm liquid cooled radiator in the tower to cool the processor.

The tower "barely" fits under my desk.

I use the same case. :D. That's a monster of a build!

Any plans on overclocking since you got the K version?

This case is fugging amazing!!! My motherboard supports 10 sata devices. Got 1 port left.

Mike,

I am obviously a computer geek, so we'll get that out of the way first. But secondly, I make my living with computers and sit behind this one 10-12 hours per day. I built the old monster 6 years ago with the 6 28" monitors. Before it blew, on any given day, I'd have 20-30 windows deep stacked on each of the 6 monitors. I might have 20 copies of notepad loaded, I typically have 3 virtual machines running, and 3 more remote desktops running to do my job.

With a plethora of monitors, I can now position critical applications on a certain monitor and simply "turn my head". With my current setup, my two email clients reside on the same monitor, but that's it. Nothing else on that screen. When I need email, I turn my head, and there it is.

Ever since Windows 98 debuted multiple monitors, I've embraced the concept and ran with it. The more real estate you have, the easier it is to get your job done in a more efficient amount of time. For the past two years I've been smothered by only having "six" monitors. 12 is the logical next step...with 4k. :yesnod: My box can actually handle one more video card, and the corresponding 4 more monitors for a total of 16. :yesnod: 12 is manageable, 16 not so much, but I could do it.

Wasted time adds up quickly in my biz.

Barry's office has a LOT of computers to go with those screens. The problem with a LOT of computers is moving between keyboard to keyboard. ALL of my past machines are now virtualized and easily accessible on my monster machine. On any given day, there are easily 3-5 virtual machines running on the new host, each one being given one monitor to call their own. WAY WAY WAY easier to control multiple computers, virtual, or through RDP with one mouse and keyboard. :yesnod:

Here's my rig, shortly being rebuilt:

2700K @ 4.6 GHz
16 GB DDR3 @ 1866
GTX Titan X (Maxwell)
4K 40" monitor
480 GB SSD boot drive
240 GB SSD "stuff" drive
~900 GB 7-way SSD RAID 0 gaming drive (LSI 9207-8i)
Water cooled, custom

Soon it'll be a new Skylake 6700K, which I have sitting on the floor waiting to be installed. :D I'm looking forward to my storage score doubling thanks to PCIe 3.0...

EDIT: I think the 3D test is wonky, it complained about vsync limiting me to 60 FPS even though it's off...

Clearly a very stout computer!!

My last box was raid-0 with 2 SSD's until they failed. I was fortunate enough to have a backup that I could restore from. Restoring raid from a backup is a challenge.

The ssd that's currently in the box is a shit drive, 960 GB. Once I'm done installing all of my stuff, it will be cloned to real high performance SSD. Then the lame one goes on a shelf as the insurance policy. Shit fails? Plug the old one back in and up in running in minutes. :yesnod: OS drive only hosts programs. All of the other array of drives host data.

Server...with monitor? I'm confused. None of mine even have GPUs.

Server actually even runs a virtual server with my cloud-based server. Still only 1 monitor. I only ever access it remotely.

At our CNC programming station at work, we have two monitors hooked up on the computer. It does make things much easier as we have the CAD drawing ( showing the drawing/ part details ) on the left monitor and the machining information on the right screen.

Not only does it make the it easier, there is less chance of an error since you aren't bouncing back and forth on a single monitor.

Jeff, welcome to my world. You hit the nail on the head. ;) Now multiply that times 6 and that's what I'll have by January. Efficiency and effectiveness to the 12th degree. :datawiz:

Computer can't handle more monitors ( due to the card plus the computer itself) plus the desk isn't big enough :D

My backups all sit on my NAS, plus a cold backup in the safe every month. It makes it a lot easier to handle storage if you have a dedicated box that can stay running 24/7! 16 2 TB drives, a pair of 8+3 RAIDZ3 ZFS sets. 32 GB Intel X25-E as a metadata cache. UPS for 2 hours on the modem, router, and server.

I'd look into doing something similar since you have so much local storage!!!

Moving all of that data around has been the biggest issue. What I've been doing recently is simply cycling in new drives to replace the smaller old ones, and putting them on a shelf. Fortunately, the storage drives rarely fail, but I do have them backed up. Currently only 2 of the 6 storage drives are 8 TB. By June they'll all be 8 TB with the originals sitting peacefully on a shelf. That data is not dynamic, so the "shelf insurance" is just fine. The OS drive is backed up nightly using Acronis. :yesnod:

I guess no matter how much you spend on a notebook, it can NEVER match up to a monster desktop. Love the new mobile workstation so far, 5 TB drive does not fit, so it's now external. A new 2 TB drive is coming to replace the 1 TB that came with the system.

The speed of the OS drive is off of the charts. These class 50 M.2 chip drives are amazing.

Edit: revised test scores attached now too. Turned off 2nd video card.

Yes. This workstation has twin fans with crossover cooling pipes. Fans are electronically controlled to direct the heat to whichever vent can handle the load at the moment in question.

I started with CGA. :D

Is that the one with the fold down keyboard and weighs 80lbs.? lol

One of the best jobs I had was a computer operator. I started on the IBM 8100, SYS38, and then onto the AS400. I went on into the PC, network, RF network, and stuff in the late '80s. No one else at the company would work on them. They though they were magic boxes LOL

My first network install was Lantastic!

Yes, the keyboard pops down and the integrated screen pops up. 25 rows of 80 characters. This model weighs only 20 lbs. But with the leather bag and expansion chassis, it weighed closer to 25 lbs. Was fun lugging it through airports.

Out of the box, this computer actually has TWO video cards, the really expensive one and the one built onto the MB. Several of the video tests done the first time I did this reverted to the built in card which sucked.

Nice!

In the real world, the average of about 10 runs would be necessary to get a good idea of what the system really does. You'll notice my disk speed slowed down, which is interesting. Could be because I've loaded a significant amount of additional programs on there since the first run. Who knows. All I care about is the difference from the first test on mine to the new test and it's MUCH better.

2 TB 3rd drive just arrived. :hurray:
