LOUISVILLE, KY - It was a stunning development for students and staff at duPont Manual High School: a teacher has resigned and police say she could face serious charges after being found partially clothed with a student in a local park.

Now we're learning more about 38-year-old Carrie Shafer.

Manual students say Shafer's resignation Sunday was all the talk around school Monday.

And they say the reason it's so shocking is because, according to them, Shafer is a married mother who also led their chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Manual students we spoke with had nothing but kind words for Shafer, the former advanced biology teacher.

Kyle Peterson says he heard the news from another teacher who was visibly upset.

"A science teacher came in and told the class about her resignation and he was almost in tears because he felt bad for her," Peterson said.

"She's a good person at heart and you can really tell that in her classes," Peterson said. "And she cares about her students."

But police say Shafer may have cared too much for one of those students - a teenage boy they say she was found with Friday night in a car parked at Miles Park across from Valhalla.

Investigators say they spotted the car in the disabled parking spot near the canoe launch area and found the attractive 38-year-old and the teen partially clothed.

Police say a strong smell of alcohol was also inside the car.

Louisville Metro Police Spokesman Dwight Mitchell says more incriminating evidence was found inside the vehicle.

"There were some articles found that appeared to have been from a sexual act - like some condoms and some wet wipes that were on the outside of the vehicle believed to have been thrown from that vehicle," Mitchell said.

"It is pretty shocking because she is one of the leaders of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes," Peterson said.

The student-run website "The RedEye" posted the story, but stated on it's site that the principal instructed them "To make no further report on this issue."

Student Chase Blaser says just everyone in school knows Shafer or knows of her.

"If you don't know her, you still know about her, so it was just kind of weird."

JCPS officials tell WAVE 3 News that Shafer has been at Manual high since 2007.

For now, Shafer has been cited with unlawful transaction with a minor, but police say because Shafer worked as a teacher at the school with the teen, she could face serious charges.

"There is a provision under the Sexual Abuse Act," Mitchell said, "where if it's a person who exercises authority over an individual, in this case by it being a teacher, it could fall under that and those charges may be forthcoming."

Police say at the time Shafer was cited, the officer didn't know she was a teacher.

In the police report, the officer stated both Shafer and the teen admitted they had been drinking beer while they were at the park.

Manual students receive letter after teacher sex scandal

LOUISVILLE, KY - Parents of kids at duPont Manual High School are getting a letter from the school's principal about the former biology teacher found in a car with a student over the weekend.

Thirty-eight-year-old Carrie Shafer resigned after police say they found her partially clothed in a car with the minor.

We reported the story on March 15, and since then the news has spread throughout the school.

"It's been going through the rumor mills and everything," said one Manual student.

"I think it's kind of unfortunate, I think people make mistakes," said another student.

According to a police citation, an LMPD officer noticed two cars after hours in Miles Park. One of the vehicle's windows were steamed up. When the officer approached the car, the citation says he found a vehicle in a handicapped space at the park near a canoe launch.

Police say both Shafer and the student were partially nude and there were used contraceptives outside the car.

Shafer and the teen told police they both had been drinking beer that Shafer provided.

We once again tried to get answers from the Shafer at her home, but no one answered.

Principal Larry Woolridge sent a letter home to students and parents, saying "This matter is a top priority which will be dealt with immediately and that a break in instruction will not occur."

"It's a bad influence honestly," said one student. "Especially for a high school full of kids who are getting older about to go to college."

The student involved is 17 years old, which is one year over the age of consent for sex in Kentucky. However, Shafer could face more charges because she is in a position of power.

Police say those additional charges could be filed at Shafer's court appearance, which is set for later this month.

If she was, then yeah she's "putting herself up on a pedestal". If not, then she was merely taking a leadership role.

Heck I didn't even know who the FCA faculty "leader" was when I was in HS. I did know who the student leader was and how he lead the group.

I agree, however Christian in Christian leadership position does have something to do with it. Irony is part of the reason this story is news. As stated, if this was some divorced, childless cougar seducing the paper boy, there would be no national story.

If she taught Saturday School at the local synagogue, then that certainly would be germane to the story. She would be a Jewish LEADER, not just a run of the mill lay (no pun intended!) member. It's been a stunning development for students and staff at DMHS, as a teacher has resigned and is now facing charges after being found partially nude with a student in a local park.

38-year-old Carrie Shafer didn't actually have to appear in court Thursday on those charges.

The married mother faces charges of unlawful transaction with a minor and unlawful parking in a handicapped space.

Police records say that shafer and the student admitted they have been drinking beer while they were at the park.

Another shocker in this case comes with the revelation that Shafer is also the leader of the school's chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Today in court, the judge filed a no contact order for Shafer and the student.

His name isn't being released since he is underage. This case heads back to court in early May.

Shafer, for now, remains free, but could face additional charges.

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A Jefferson County grand jury has indicted a former duPont Manual High School teacher who police say was found partially clothed in a car with a student.

38-year-old Carrie Shafer is charged with custodial interference which is a felony and unlawful transaction with a minor.

Shafer has already pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor unlawful transaction with a minor in Jefferson District Court. Shafer will be back in Friday.

LOUISVILLE, KY - A former biology teacher at duPont Manual High School who was arrested after police found her partially clothed in a parked car with a 17-year-old student in eastern Louisville pleaded guilty Friday to two felonies.

Carrie M. Shafer, 38, resigned from duPont Manual a few days after she was found in a handicapped parking spot at Miles Park with the student late on March 3, 2011. Police say she was partially nude and had provided alcohol to the student.

After Shafer pleaded guilty Friday morning, she was sentenced to one year for unlawful transaction with a minor and three years for custodial interference. As part of a plea agreement, she will not serve any jail time but will be on probation for three years. She was also fined $1,000.

"It was consistent with the wishes of the family; it was consistent with my opinion and my advice of this case and we wanted a quick resolution and we were able to get one," said Jon Heck with the Commonwealth Attorney's Office.

During probation, Shafer is not allowed to teach or come in contact with any minors and must attend counseling.

"I don't know of a school district that would accept someone with that record. I think that would be pretty extraordinary," Heck said.

Shafer never faced any sexual charges.

"What we were focused on was her lack of permission to be anywhere around that child after school hours and that's what she was convicted of and giving him alcohol," Heck said.

Although Shafer is now a convicted felon, she could have faced additional charges under a new Kentucky statute that prohibits adults in a position of authority to have sexual contact with minors.

Kentucky's age of consent is 16.

Shafter and her attorneys walked by reporters and only said "no comment" when asked about her plea and sentencing.
