View Full Version : how would OT handle this?

so, as most of you know, I'm fat.
There are certain things I am required to do in the Coast Guard to remedy this.

The Commandant requires that I work out 3 times a week, for at least 45 minutes a day.

The local command (who is in New Orleans, and we are a detachment of that) requires the same, but also wants me to keep a nutrition log (what I eat). I am just required to keep one, not share it or have anyone review it.

My supervisor, is asking me to give him a copy of the log every week. I view this a gross invasion of my privacy, almost up there with monitoring my personal cell phone calls. I informed him about my objections, and he went off telling me that it's required that I show him the log. I pulled up the instruction and pointed out that it's only required I keep one, and no mention is made of me having to give it to anyone. I offered that I would give him a copy of it if I end up not losing my weight.
He said that this conversation is a waste of time, and I need to give him a copy every week or I'll get booked (charged with a UCMJ violation) and he left.

Would you just roll over, or take it up the chain?

If you need to lose the weight to keep your job, which apparently you do, it seems like a good way to keep you focused.

Why does it anger you that he wants to see that you're working on it?

This is coming from a former fat azz....keep the log, eat like you are supposed too...Walk 2 to 4 miles a day....(BRISKLY) work up a sweat AND LOSE THE GAWDDAMN WEIGHT....Did you ever think your supervisor may actually be concerned about you??? :skep: Do what you should, put your big boy pants on and STFU....:D

And yes I can say that.....I weighted 295lbs at age 21. I got my head on straight and lost down to 153 in 2 years time. I've kept the blubber offf for the most part. I am convinced it saved my life.

I just have a problem with giving that information away.
I really can't explain it. Its like people who don't drive illegally complaining about how Onstar can view your driving.

I disagree. Part of your contract says you'll keep your weight down. They let you keep your job despite the fact that you'd gained the weight. I think it's reasonable that they ask to see proof of what you're doing to correct the situation.

I understand how you would feel it's an invasion of your privacy, but keeping your weight down is part of your job. It's not like your supervisor is tracking your weight by way of naked pictures.

Plus, it's even better motivation to stay healthy. What's more important to you, your job or being fat?

The log is to make you think about what you are puttting in your belly, not for them to track you. I feel that you are against this. I nevr had a weight problem until I went Saudi and had chefs cooking me three meals a day, not to mention I was hardly working. I',m 5'11 and got to 235 lbs.

I'm now down to 180 and can see my six pack. If you want to send me a PM I will reply with some motivation you will print out and keep in your pocket and guarantee you will lose some weight. It won't be pleasent, but I will try to help.

You're pushing your luck pretty hard.

How important is your job to you?
How important is your privacy?

We know what order the Coast Guard prioritizes them.
You've got to decide what order you prioritize them; and be willing to
accept with the consequences either way.

1) Show log, keep steady job with great benefits and excellent retirement

2) Say FU and end up in the real world where you bust your ass to try to keep your head above water.

Sounds like you're pushing back just to push back. What's so secretive about what's in your log? It might be interesting if you kept TWO logs - 1 that lists everything you actually eat and 1 that you write what you THINK would be acceptable for others to see. Then compare the 2 logs and see if there's any difference.

He's probably told him,"Make sure any wide bodies you have in your detail get their shit in order, I want you to watch them like a hawk!"

:iagree: The most important part about keeping a food journal is to be honest with yourself about everything you eat. Write it down! You will have your good days, and follow all the diet rules. You will also have the not so good days, when you have a slice of pizza or a few Girl Scout cookies (or a box). Don't get down on yourself and give up after those days! Take it one day at a time!

IMO if you spent as much time and energy on losing the weight as you do bitching about it, you'd probably have the problem fixed. I have taken the information and opinions given, applied them to my situation, and determined my best course was to go along with the command's request.

however, 11 posts per day is not interfering with my obligations to the Coast Guard or life in general. At best, it's maybe an hour of my day. (and yes, I do sometimes surf the forum from my phone while on a bike)

I work out in the mornings, from 6:30 to 7:45.
I work at a desk, processing orders from then 8:15 until 3:30. Then I normally work out again (usually a couple mile jog), go home and spend my day however. Usually house maintance (I'm laying tile on the laundry room floor currently) and then the last few hours of the night I spend on the couch with the dogs, or on my PC.
When the wife gets home, the evening routine will probably change.

a few months back, due to a number of circumstances I do not feel like discussing here, I came to the conclusion that my life would improve out of the military, in a stable area, and going back to school. This was a mistake... well, not really, just the way I was going about it was incorrect.

There has not been one instance where I have ever blamed anyone else for my wieght, I take full accountability and responsbility for what transpired.

As I sat there, that afternoon, thinking about what had happened, I realized a made a mistake. I realized that I owe it, at least to my daughter, to provide a good standard of living for her. I regretted what I had done.
It was by the grace of god, that only 5 days later, I was informed that my paperwork had been "lost" and I was to be given another chance. At that moment, I was upset about the emotional roller coaster of that week.
Here my wife and I had spent the last 4 days planning out the rest of our life as best we could, and then it got turned all around... again.
One of my co-workers put it in perspective for me "You spent 4 days on that plan, and 10 years on the Coast Guard, which are you really more committed to?" bam. There it was.
I heard it somewhere, and it's worth mentioning here "Only on the precipice of disaster, do we truely evolve"
I am now undertaking the trek to get my bachelors in EE (Electronics Engineering), lose my weight, track my food intake, track my excersize, and keep it going. I even plan to throw my name in the hat for a Direct Commissioned Engineer.

Again, my original issue in this thread was not the food log, but was instead that I viewed my command having it as an invasion of my privacy, which, appearently, is just to some overriding sense of paranoia I possess.

Paranoia? Mr. Tin Foil Hat Guy, here.......and as pro privacy/pro government getting out of people's private life as this Libertarian is, you, as a government employee, especially a military enlistee, have already given up many of the rights to privacy and to be left alone that civillians enjoy, or should enjoy if it wasn't for nanny state government.

You voluntarily agreed to be subjected to the UCMJ, for instance.

In this case, I'd say Uncle Sam, via your direct supervisor and those up the food chain (pun intended) from your supervisor have a reasonable expectation that you hand over the food log.

I think you have made the right choice to just go along, and this is coming from a definite Don Quixote type who is willing to waste time and money fighting government b/s rather than just going along quietly.

Keep up the good work on dropping the poundage. It sounds like you are doing pretty well so far. It sounds like Uncle Sam wants to keep you, so showing progress is your way of telling him you want to stay with him, too.
