What are you guys using if you are not purchasing Dexos oil at the dealer? I went to the auto parts stores and Wal-Mart and nothing I saw on the different brands labels indicates that it is Dexos certified.
I even stopped at an oil change place and asked and got a blank stare and a half azz statement that 'our' oil meets the requirements though it is not branded as meeting Dexos requirements.
If you go to Mobil's web-site and enter your vehicle, it states you can use Super 5000 or the full synthetic, I did note that the Super 5000 is now API-5, it replaced the Clean 5000 which was API-4.
I use Mobil 5000 in all our vehicles.
Thanks
Bob
We have a new Nissan but that just takes regular oil with a smidge of wassabi.

The API "SM" certification has been the standard since 2005. "SM" is the equivalent of the ILSAC GF-4. To keep up with the new GF-5 specification, the API revised their certification with the new "SN" rating. So SN = GF-5

You might want to toss a shaving of fresh ginger root into the crankcase every 1,000 miles.

That is a good read, so the new Mobil Super 5000 which is GF-5 would be okay to use.
On a side note I change the oil at 3k regardless of what the oil life monitor says, I have been doing this in all the cars I have owned and all the engine look new if you look in the oil cap, never have seen an oil film build-up
Thoughts?

I've been running Castrol Full Synthetic in my vehicles for years. I fudge a little and wait 5000 between changes, instead of the old '3000 mile' between changes.

my Dodge wants and oil change evry 3000 miles, but the "change oil now" cues start at 2250 miles.

What year and model may I ask?

Its common practice for all automotive manufactures to specify a certain level of oils and lubricants.
If they did not, SOME people would still be using oils barely above crude level just because they can save .10cents a quart.
To require that consumers put the oils that the engines were designed for makes sense to me.
I change out every 5,000 on the Vette and 10,000 on the diesel. I’ve sent out samples to labs at these levels and have always come back in acceptable ranges.
Since we no longer use leaded gasoline along with some other upgrades in engine manufacturing. It a waste of resources to change out any sooner unless your car/truck has seen severe duty. Day at the track, pulling heavy loads for long distances, etc.
