A senior airman stationed at Langley Air Force Base is accused of growing marijuana in his apartment and selling it, according to court documents.
Charges against John Alan Deming, 31, of the 700 block of Austin Court in Newport News, include possession of marijuana and cocaine, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, and possession of a firearm with a controlled substance, online court records state.
Deming has a court appearance scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 23, in Newport News General District Court. A phone number listed for Deming was disconnected when called Thursday.
He is a member of the 30th Intelligence Squadron, 497th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Group based out of Langley, which reviews data from unmanned drones in war zones.
According to court documents, Deming was in a Portsmouth hospital and asked someone to go by his apartment and get some clothing. Newport News police were called after the person found items in Deming's apartment that seemed suspicious, police said.
During a Sept. 9 search, Newport News police officers confiscated 1 1/2 pounds of marijuana, one gram of cocaine, 12 firearms and two cellphones from Deming's apartment, court documents state.
In a back room, officers found heat lamps, fertilizer and other plant materials they say were used to cultivate marijuana plants. Officers also recovered stacks of medications that contain pseudoephedrine, lithium batteries and other items they say Deming planned to use to make methamphetamines.
A large quantity of ammunition, rubber gloves, starter fluid and empty jugs were also found in the apartment, according to court documents. Police also confiscated a laptop, Deming's journal, a GPS system and a flash drive from Deming's home.
