I remember when the 1990 ZR-1's came out. Complete with a $40,000 dealer markup. Yep. $100K for a Corvette in 1990.
Was watching Mecum the other night. A 1991 ZR-1 sold for..........
$17,000. :ack:
Two C4's in mint condition didn't even break the $10,000 mark.
Yeesh...
and the 96 Grand Sport vert with red guts did like 30K, with a no sale.
The 1969 Chevelle SS 396 vert, silver with red guts was awfully pretty.

i'd like to pick up a grand sport coupe with red guts..
In another 20 years the ZR-1 might start getting more valuable. I'd like to have one.

Yeesh...I almost bought one, but didn't because I thought it was too expensive...even though it was probably one of the best cars made at the time.

I was at the Mecum auction yesterday morning here in KC and they had two ZR1 there. They weren’t supposed to sell till around 3:00 in the afternoon. We didn't hand around to see what they went for. They were in pristine condition though.

The only ZR-1's that I know that pull decent money are the last year, which is the 95. I have only seen a few touch at 40k, most of them sell for high 20's, low 30's. They could potentially be worth more, but honestly don't see them going for more 50k at anytime period.

The seller was smart.

Anyone who thinks a car is a good investment is most likely going to get an unpleasant surprise.
If you like it, and you can afford it, then buy it. But don't expect to experience a financial gain in the process.

Funny you should ask this question IC. The last time I got banned from CF it was b/c of my opinion on this very subject.
As an investment, I wouldn't want to bet my retirement on it. In my not humble opinion, the ZR-1 is a terrible investment. Yes, it was an awesome car. And if any C4 will ever be worth any money, it will be a 95 ZR-1.
But lets face some facts for a moment. There were about 700 million C4s made over 12 years. And we all know the C4 isn't appreciated by many and probably never will be. So even though the ZR-1 is the best C4, it is still a C4. If the spilt window had been made for 12 years, it wouldn't be selling for a premium either.
And aside from that, you can get a good C5 Z06 for $18k and even C6s are in the low $20s. Both will beat the crap out of a ZR-1, look better, are probably more reliable and easier to get parts for. I can't fathom why anyone would pay more than $12k for any C4. Even in perfect condition, the king of the C4s is still a C4.

I really asked this as a rhetorical question. Like...all of you clowns who paid that money for a Vette are nuts.

It was nuts to spend that kind of money on a Corvette back then, even if it was "King of the Hill". There are worse things however. For example, it might be kind of embarrassing today to admit paying $100G's for one back in the day, but nobody would try to hide the fact they did it. A much more embarrassing thing would be to have a big older unattractive gal from the past that you thought, "what the hell, I'll never see her again and nobody will ever know" recognize you in a restaurant in front of friends & family and have to peel out of there while pretending not to know her... :leaving:

Still got my ban hammer too. :D
Seriously...those who know me also know that the C4 is one of my favorite cars of all time. I absolutely love the Collector's Edition and having a ZR-1 would be nice. I just think that whenever a "dealer markup" is involved, customers should say "Go feck yourself." This is a situation where it came back to bite many in the ass. I just hope a lesson was learned.

Prices appeared to be down considerable in this event (generally speaking)
I did notice that a lot more cars than usual did not meet reserve, at least at air time!

Some of you maybe remember a fellow who owned a yellow ZR1, he supposedly helped save the NCM back a dozen years ago, maybe more??
anyway there is a brick at the NCM for him...maybe a bench seat??
he died of brain cancer about a decade ago...Douglas K. Johnson.....
he was a 'friend' who screwed me over BIG time in a business deal, him and William F. Tschanen.....who is a noted thief and crook.....with about 6 aliases and spellings listed for his name on most searches....

I'm not surprised. Although the tide was turning in 1990, the number of fantastically awesome cars from that era was few and far between, much different than from what it was like just 20 years earlier. Although the ZR-1 was the high water mark, it won't make much of a difference since the tide was so low.
was the high water mark, it won't make much of a difference since the tide was so low.
I;m getting sea sick.:puke:
...I just hope a lesson was learned.
The lesson learned:
There is good money in flipping much hyped cars if you get in early and are at the right place at the right time.
There are 3-4 C4s that will bring good money; CE, '95 ZR-1, Grand Sport, etc.
The same tenets will hold true as on any collector car, low miles, condition, rarity.
I don't get the hate for the C4 and I sure wouldn't cut my nose off to spite my face.

A lesson may have been learned by those dumbasses that lost their ass on them, but it wasn't the first time or the last time that the hype took over any logic. I am barely old enough to remember when the 1978 pace car came out and the buyers went crazy. Another car around the time of the ZR-1 was the Acura NSX. There was a local ego-building puff piece about the first and maybe only one to be delivered in West Michigan and the buyer bragged about how fortunate he was to be chosen to fork over $80K and have a one of a kind. He said in the article how it could only increase in value and was a great investment.
I agree about the C-4's and would love to have a Collector's Edition myself. The big thing that would scare me about a ZR-1 is the availability of some parts.

I think "Good Money" needs to be defined. None of the cars you mentioned are worth anywhere close to their MSRP. Buying any of them as an investment would have been a failure.

People who think their C4 is worth more than a few grand are only fooling themselves. It is still a 20 year old slow and ugly car, no matter what the name is.

If you are talking about buying them new ( like the '78 Pace fiasco) and holding them, then yes, I agree.
If you can find clean, well-optioned, low mile examples of the ones I listed, you can do OK.
