View Full Version : Mid-Engine On The Way?
Who knows, could be..........
2019 Chevrolet Corvette C8 mid-engine prototype shown in spy photos (http://autoweek.com/article/spy-photos/mid-engine-corvette-c8-our-best-look-yet#ixzz4K5QT33LQ)
Saw that earlier today. Will be interesting to see what the final product looks like.
Not liking that short nose.

Not liking that short nose.
With bumper, hood and headlight height regs these days, it's hard to get the nose down low. If you look, Ferrari cheats on the 458/488, and even the Laugh Errari, by having looong front overhangs, with means they scrape thier noses everywhere...
GM cant afford to put a nose lift on this Caddy, it costs too much... so, short, blunt nose... you can make them look good... Huayra does it, IMO...

I read an article today which asked why we aren't buying muscle cars anymore. I have the answer... nobody needs a 500 or more HP car with all the electronic wizardry, active handling, ostrich leather, heated seats sunroofed automatic shifted toy they might take out on a sunday cruise or to a show weekend. All that fluff and complexity costs serious dollars and muscle cars "back in the day" were strippers and priced so Average Joe could stretch a bit and still afford a rad ride. The cars simply cost too much today.
Give me a Mustang GT 350 spec without the leather, stereo, sunroof, sound deadening, stripes, scoops, carbon fiber bullshit etcetera; price it less than 35K and watch the line form outside your doors.

What would really turn me on might be called the "5 for 5". 500HP, 500 TQ, 5 speed manual, 3500 curb and $25000 (5 times 5) list. I wouldn't care who made it, whether it had bare floors and no headliner, or was running 225/75/15 radials at all four corners, there would be one in my driveway this weekend.

There's some blurring of the ZR1 and the C8 introduction. A modern car mfgr needs 7-9 years run (on a brand new model, or after a major redeign) to get a decent return out of the design effort. This makes me believe this new car is the Duntov ZR1 whatever... and not the C8. Could also be a Caddy, they want a premier sports car that's exotic, the XLR was a recent attempt at this; and I've read where that division is hungry for another.
I would be totally surprised if the C7 ends production before 2021; especially since it has been doing well up to this point.

Chevy seems determined to price itself out of the Average American's life. Not a good idea from my point of view.

If it is a Chevy, it won't be The Chevrolet Corvette, it will be something alongside The Corvette. They might give it a name that speaks to a connection to The Corvette, such as The Corvette Duntov. It won't be built in the same numbers as The Corvette either, I'm guessing something like a 4 Corvettes for each "Duntov" built.
Since it isn't The Corvette, let alone the 8th generation of it, it won't be the C8, which will debut, around 2022/24, and be a front-mid-engined, targa hatchback.
It's gonna be a Caddy anyway, and I'm betting the Z06 Corvette will get a performance update about the same time, and remain the sports car flagship, by the skin of its teeth. The Caddy, will be the performance luxury flagship.

Hasn't every Corvette been priced above "average American" budgets?
However, Car and Driver and several other automotive magazines are all predicting that the C8 will be placed directly opposite the Ford GT which will cost $400K.
I, for one, might want one but there is no way that I would be able to afford a car at this price point. Basically, the predicted cost is more than the cost of my town house and my current Corvette combined.

I will believe it when I see it. Until then it is just speculation as to what GM is going to do.:cert:
