Nice, I have a older 686.(stainless version of your gun) Your gun is a much better gun for serious shooting than a J or K frame if your using magnum loads.:yesnod:

With that said as it has a lock it would never find its way to my house!

I have this.
No comparison to that cannon, but you mention a lock.
This does not have a lock, but I always wondered what exactly does the lock do and what purpose does it serve?

I have a pre lock K frame (64-3), pinned etc. There is most certainly a difference in quality between the older ones and the new stuff with the MIM parts, but it's still a very nice piece.

I didn't feel like waiting around for an older 586, and the prices for the pre-locks have gotten a little bit nutty in my part of the world (CA), so I just went ahead and got a new one. Plus, they RARELY come up for sale locally, and there are draconian rules in CA for importing stuff that isn't on the CA DOJ extortion list. I am very pleased with it, even though it has the Hillary hole.

Nice. The lock renders the gun useless basically. There is a key for the little hole above the cylinder latch, which basically locks up the gun. It was all part of the Clinton era anti gun embellishments...

Rumors and a few rare instances of the revolvers 'locking up' on their own under heavy recoil have turned the purists off from the newer guns, but the documented cases of it happening were with the Scandium frame revolvers with full house loads. AFAIK, it hasn't occurred with the Steel frame versions, and the reports of it happening, while some probably true, have become a part of internet myth.

This will be a safe queen and a range gun for my casting projects and not a primary home defense gun anyway, so I am not concerned.

Thanks for that succinct dissertation.
I always wondered about all of that. :cert:

Good post!

If I may I recommend you join the S&W Forum. Lots of good people and very good advice available.(I have been there for a while now) Very strict mods especially in the Lounge section, but its a great forum.

Very nice :seasix:

Can parts from the lock be removed? I would hate to have a problem at the most inopportune time :willy:

Just for grins, what does a 50 round box of... Winchester USA 110gr hollowpoints cost out there? I am way out of touch with the cost of factory ammo.

I have no idea, I don't buy it either

Yes they can. Its really not that hard of a job if you know your way around under the side plate.

There is a man on the S&W forum that makes a plug that fills in that hole above the cylinder release. He has sold a shit load of them.

The lock and its ramifications are a big topic that just keeps coming back on, it kind of ranks right up there with what is better a .357 or .45.:D

Our very first firearm after we got married was a used stainless steel S&W .357 revolver (obviously no lock) that used to be a cop's service revolver. Still have it, it's in perfect condition and I've put probably 1000 rounds through it as it's really fun to shoot. We took it, along with a few other guns, to our concealed carry range qualification and the instructor let me shoot his cowboy revolver in exchange for him shooting that piece a bit. His cowboy revolver was a single action job that had a hair trigger like you wouldn't believe, and accurate as hell. In Missouri you have to shoot both a semi-auto and a revolver during your qualification.

All 3 of my revolvers are S&W, the 686+ is my favorite. I have the factory Hogue style rubber grips and love them.

Nice piece, right up there with the big dogs.

Used to carry this .38 S&W Model 10 combat barrel back in the day, my best qualification scores ever with any pistol.

Was looking for a good deal for the longest time until a neighbor and myself were BSing about guns, he said he had a Smith he wanted to sell, he wasn't sure what it was, it was his dad's. As soon as I saw it.......I said I'll buy it. He wanted $200......I felt bad and happy, I gave him $300. I love that weapon.

I put 3000 plus rounds through a model 19 before it went out of time. I traded it for a used 686 and put 4000 through it without any issue before I got the boat. I miss that sumbitch, I could keep all six on a paper plate at 100 yards using my pet 158 grain max load.
