So I'm washing a load of clothes since I will run out of underwear tomorrow. (top loader Whirlpool) I notice that the washer just stopped in mid cycle, won't drain, won't spin either. Super. Just super. So I peruse the "Yahoo questions and answers" thread about this. Oh, the pump is clogged they say. Pull the pump off and make money with all the spare change that will be in the pump they say. So I siphon off most of the water , then pump the remaining water out with a hand pump. Take the hoses off the pump, and yeah, it's like my very own Spindletop, only with dirty water instead of oil. Spend 20 minutes drying floor.
Note to self. Next time, have a drain pan ready to catch the water.
Anyhoo, I check the pump. It's clean as a whistle. I mean, you could eat out of it, assuming you could get some food and a tiny fork in it.
OK, not my problem, what else could it be?
[Light bulb moment]
Check You Tube for videos on this very subject. Eureka! Turns out my problem can be caused by a bad lid switch. How to check it? Uh, continuity tester, do this, then that. Wait. I have nothing like that.
[second light bulb moment]
Search You Tube for redneck solution to problem. Sure enough, you can hotwire your lid switch by jamming a wire in two prongs of the plug. Aerovette style, so your machine thinks it has a working switch. Sweet!
Note to self: order lid switch tomorrow.
Bring in trash bag full of wet clothes and finish washing them so I can put them in the dryer and hope it will work. Otherwise, it's looking like day one of turn the drawers inside out.
Cliff's: Washing Machine lid switch failed. Temporary redneck fix applied.
