I received a call tonight at dinner. Recorded voice said "Your MasterCard account has been locked. To unlock your account, please press 1."

Phishing scam.

I hung up. But just to be on the safe side, when I got home I called CitiBank and my Credit Union (where I have MC) and they confirmed that they made no calls. The guy at Citi explained that if you press a number, they try to get you to give them your card info. They also said that any call they make will be from a live person who clearly identifies themselves.

Some of you may have had this happen, others may not have. It was the first time it happened to me, so I thought I'd pass this info along. I'm sure it isn't limited to MasterCard either.

Be really careful folks...times are tough out there and scammers, like police departments, are working overtime to rip you off. Don't EVER give out any info unless you've confirmed who it is. If you're unsure, hang up and call the bank through which you have your credit when you get home. An hour or two won't matter.

We get the "we can lower the interest rate on you credit cards" bullshit.

My wife says "what card?" then slams the phone down :D

Yeah, it seems that the scum are really hustling nowdays, they'll have trouble getting me because I refuse to answer any call from a number I don't recognize on my home phone. If it is my CC company with a warning they will leave a message on my machine. :yesnod:

My bank has told me in the past that they will NEVER call about a card issue and ask for any information. They will call and tell you there is a problem and to call the credit union and they won't even offer a number for you to call.

When my wifes grandfather died we were all listed in the obituary and EVERYONE listed in the family started receiving calls from Bank Of America (The real caller ID shows BOA) about "outstanding account balances" and tell you to call a number. It's a phishing scam. It sickens me to know that people will try to take advantage of people grieving.
