I would like to meet the genius who designed the idiotic under box storage for the spare tire for these trucks. :toetap:
He obviously didn't live in the land of salted winter roads! Everything rusts under there and they put this stupid cable system with extra safety catches that seize at the first sign of rust. I'm going to have to cut the big crossnut in half to get the damn thing down. And it will never go back under there again. to say nothing of the leaked down rusted wheel!

It'll be strapped inside the box where it should be.

People around these parts take 'em down immediately after purchase.
I feel your pain...

I've got a '97 Sonoma with a full size spare under the bed. I'm sure it's never been out, and I'm sure it has a consistency close to dust.

Just hope you never HAVE to use it.

Somebody stole a spare tire? Damn, I have never even heard of such a thing. It's a steel wheel. How much could it be worth on the used market?

I assume they wanted the like new tire.

That's why whenever I get a new truck I put an old worn out tire on the extra rim. Never had one stolen.....yet.

Just a tip from growing up in Wisconsin. Some people buy a tire cover like you see on the back of a Jeep to put on the spare. Cuts down on the issues you're having. Another option would be to cut a piece of plywood in the diameter of the spare and use zip ties to hold it in place. I've done that in the past, worked like a champ.

my father carries the spare for his Yukon in the back of the SUV instead of underneath now, as the original has to be torched out of the holder under the truck.
