View Full Version : You may have noticed the Cubs are doing well this year...

Just how well? Well, for them, well. Their best year prior to this year (at this point in the season) in my lifetime was 1969, when I was 8 years old. They were 30 games over .500 then at 71-41, just like the Cubs of 2016 were yesterday afternoon. Thing is, the '69 Cubs had an epic meltdown their remaining 50 games, going 21-29 and missing the playoffs.

So...I was a little worried about this because Cubs fan, as our next series was a 4-game series against the arch rival 2nd place St. Louis Cardinals. Last night's game at Wrigley was an 11-inning nail biter and one the Cubs barely tied to go into extras. Their pitching proved superior and the winning run was walked in with bases loaded to give the Cubs a 4-3 win.

I was watching today's game for awhile. Kinda bored. Cubs up 13-1 last I checked after 7. The Cards look dejected, their announcers are despondent, and they are starting a rookie pitcher in his second appearance tomorrow if I heard them right, with a rather depleted staff of relievers after yesterday and today.

And, assuming Cubs win today, 14 games up on the 2nd place team, that will put them in rarefied territory, probably their best start after 102 games since...??? 1901 or something? Too lazy to look it up. Don't care. :D

Although I am ultimately a Giants fan, the Cubs have always been a sentimental favorite of mine, too. I would never feel bad if the Cubs won a World Series.

:iagree:

While I have been a lifelong fair weather Tigers fan, geographically the cubs are about the same distance from my ranch, and I do have a big soft spot for them. :seasix:

I wouldn't mind seeing the Cubbies win one for a change. It's been WAY too long.

Somewhat related...my next door neighbor on the west side (not Mrs. Kravitz) played soccer for TCU. Her boyfriend, Preston Morrison, who pitched for TCU in the College World Series, is now a starting pitcher for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, which is the Class-A Advanced farm team for the Cubs. He lives here in the off-season. Very nice kid (and has a 1.90 ERA!).

I already told them I want tickets when he makes it to the Majors :D

Double header today against Milwalkee, looks like a sweep.

The Cubs just had their best August in franchise history, going back to about 1574 or so. Roughly. They went 22-6 in August, and are now 85-47 going into September with a 15 game lead over 2nd place St. Louis. They now play a 4-game series against the 2nd place Giants at Wrigley.

The Jay's aren't too shabby either.

I'm looking forward to watching the four game series about to begin between the Cubs and the Giants. Right now, the Giants are in second place in their division. They are leading in the Wild Card race, and one thing is for sure, if the Giants or the Dodgers get into the playoffs as a wild card, they will have the Cubs to thank for it, because they have done so well in crushing the other competition.:yesnod:

Cubs celebrated clinching the NL Central title after beating Milwaukee in extra innings. Technically they clinched when St. Louis lost last night but it feels a lot better to celebrate coming off a win. Cubs have a magic number of 9 between them and the Nats to win the NL outright and get home field through the playoffs and also play the winner of the wild card series instead of playing the winner of the NL West. The Nationals have the next best record and are currently 6 games back from the Cubs.

They got in as a wild card last year, nice to win the division this year!

Yep, NYY lifelong fan. MAJOR disappointment this year.

Can they do it? Of course they can, but I don't think they will.

Last night's game speaks volumes.

My O's are still in the hunt even if they are kinda streaky this year.
