That statue, which was built in 1931!, gets hit by lightning about 6 times a year on average. In 2014 one bolt took the end of a finger off that had to be repaired. That must be what those pointy looking coppers are for on the top of the arms......lightning rods, which direct the current down the base through it's steel substructure. I'd hate to be up there during a sudden storm! :willy:
