Default It's That Time Of Year Again !!! The Salmon Are Running !!

We were supposed to go today but Captain Vince called it off, as the salmon aren't running yet.
This coming
Tuesday is the day.

We'll be fishing off of Olcott NY in Lake Ontario.
Basically that is where the lower Niagara river empties into Lake Ontario.
The salmon run up the lower Niagara River to Niagara Falls and think they are going to jump up them.
Last time out we limited out in an hour and a half and walked with 49 lbs. of beautiful salmon steaks. (12 fish limit).

Need my address for filets

Good luck fishing
~~~~~~~~~~~~
One of the guys I used to work with loved to go salmon fishing but hated fish Every year he would go to the Salmon River ( right off Rt 81 above Syracuse, NY ) and bring back a large cooler packed with salmon filets.
He would give fish to whomever wanted some. It was great
He refused to accept any money to offset his costs.
You suck. That is almost as much fun as hitting the Blues off the beach in Rhode Island. Have fun, and pop a top for me when you finish for the day!
Here is what they're shagging this week.
No King Salmon though.
Hopefully they're waiting for us to show up.
Ughhh ! We got shut out.... No Kings this time around.
We ended up getting two small coho salmon and 3 lake trout.
One consolation was that I got my new Okuma rod & reel set up and wet for the 1st time.
Of the 10 lines that we had trolling, my new set-up bagged the largest fish of the day, a lake trout. It's cherry was popped and my new rod officially has good juju...
Even though we got shut out, it was great to be out on a boat for the afternoon, as the weather was perfect and we did have a great time out.
I'll put some pics up tonight
A small coho...
That's why they call it FISHING and not CATCHING...
What reel did you use on that new Okuma rig? Curious...
We like:
- Okuma CV-55L for our longer copper rigs
- Okuma MA-45DX and Coldwater 303D for short lead core setups
- Okuma Coldwater 353D for downriggers
- Shimano 850LC for stainless wire and braid dipsy rigs
Getting a boat rigged for Salmon fishing is expensive! We now have 35 rod/reel setups on the boat and could use a few more...
BTW, regardless if you are buying Okuma, Shimano, Daiwa, or any other brand -- send the reel to Tuna's Reel Troubles in Ludington, MI. He replaces the factory drag discs with ones of his own design (DragMasters). Rebuilt reels from Tuna's are day-and-night-difference better than factory setups. Wow, sounds like you've got a nice setup.
My daughter got me a CV 45 D with lead core for X-mas and I bought the matching rod to go with it. Little did I know, but the rod has a tenancy to loosen at the reel, so the charter captain said to put a little blue Lok-Tite on it. Sure enough, it did loosen when I was reeling a 5 lb. lake trout in. For Okuma, you'd think that wouldn't happen. My cousin has a 21' Lund with a 500hp Merc and probably 8 Okumas on board for trolling. Mine is now ready to go since the shakedown yesterday.
We had similar problems with the reel-rod connection flexing or loosening. We solved that problem by using the rod clamps that come with each reel. If you install the clamps, be careful not to over tighten, as you can collapse the rod handle!
Good luck fishing!
