Default Anyone have a Pacemaker?

My brother (61) has been complaining about being tired all the time and can't do physical activities for more than a few minutes. He went to the doctor and they sent him to a heart specialist. They did the stress test and found that even when doing that his heart rate never increased and stayed around 40 - 50 beats per minute. The doctor practically freaked out and said he was a heart attack waiting to happen. They prescribed a pacemaker.

He had it installed yesterday. Anyone with experience with a pacemaker here and any advise I can pass along to him?

I've had one since 2020. My resting heart rate was in the high 30s, low 40s and I had very little energy. The implant procedure is simple with very little recovery time. I'm now paced at 60 BPM approximately 85% of the time. I sleep MUCH better and I have lots of energy. I no longer fall asleep in the afternoon and I don't feel tired all the time. Mine is only a pacemaker, not a pacemaker/defibrillator. Battery life is approximately 8 years.

By the way, they're "implanted", not "installed"!

Sound's exactly like what he was experiencing. I don't think it was a defibrillator just a pacemaker installed.

Been a mechanic and in maintenance all my life. I don't implant, I install.

After 6 minutes on the treadmill the Dr. stopped the test and everyone in the clinic came in because they thought he was a heart attack waiting to happen. Needless to say the staff was in a mild state of panic. They then told him he could get the procedure done the next day or wait a month for the specialist to come back to the rural area where they live. They did tell him if he waited there was no guarantee he's make it a month unless he just sat on the couch and did nothing and even that might not save him. He didn't wait.

There are numerous reasons to have one installed/implanted.

I have one because of Afib. Not the reason you might imagine. Mine is there only to keep me from passing out when converting from AF to NSR.

Some people with AF (small %) have long conversion pauses (no heartbeat) when converting from AF to NSR, kind of like rebooting a computer. Mine have lasted upwards of 4 seconds, which if you are seated or lying down is not life-threatening ( feels kind of taking a giant whiff of laughing gas).

However, for me it meant not driving when in AF ( I almost killed myself and mr.owc6 on the Capital Beltway). I almost killed myself in the bathroom, and ended up in the hospital with severe injuries, and then had a pacemaker installed/implanted.

It's set at 50 BPM, so now I can live a normal life even when in AF. It rarely gets used, and probably the battery will last longer than me.

Just curious, I'm sure they educate you on the do's and don'ts. Iwas looking around and saw this. Seems like quite a list, are they valid?

Avoid devices that interfere with pacemakers
Cell phones. ...
Electronic cigarettes.
Headphones. ...
Household appliances, such as microwave ovens, major appliances, electric blankets, and heating pads are usually safe if they are working properly.
Metal detectors, such as those used for airport security.

I suppose it depends on the brand.

The only caution that Medtronic told me was don't keep a cell phone in the left chest pocket. They said to tell TSA, but that the scans should not affect it. They even claim it's EMP proof.

disclaimer: check with the manufacturer of the one you have.
