If there is not a reliable firearm to permanently ventilate the perp, bludgeoning to death is a good alternative.

Many years back (late 70s) my SIL had a rather bad tempered Saint Bernard. Something happened and he went after her in the kitchen, she got bit a couple times.
She picked up a cast iron skillet and with a couple good swings solved the problem.

Course she had to go in for medical attention & stitches, the dog was hooked up to a piece of rope dragged outside and transfered to a hole in the ground!
