What do you know about Subaru small engines? I have been looking at the Honda ones but I got to test drive one of these and liked it, just wanted to make sure that the Subaru engine will hold up for a while. Thoughts?

I think you will be screwed once the battery starts to deteriorate. Just like with electric golf carts. Replacing a battery is $$$ If you want it to last your lifetime. I would stick with a gas motor.

Subaru Robin has been in the industrial engine business a long time. They are not as universally recognized as Honda, but if you have local parts support I think you should be OK with that engine.
