New telemarketing trick......:mad:

Well this is a first. I rarely pick up the phone unless I know who it is or am expecting a call from an unknown number. 888's and 800's can go themselves!
But today the phone rang and when I looked at the display it was MY OWN NUMBER! ....so I picked it up and it was some trying to sell me a credit card. Slam!
How can they call me and display my own number?

The children had been put to bed and the baby-sitter was watching the television when the phone rang. She answered but all she heard was a man laughing hysterically and then a voice saying, "I'm upstairs with the children, you'd better come up." Thinking it was "one of those phone calls" or a practical joke she slammed down the receiver and turned the television sound up. A short time later the phone rang again and, as she picked it up, the unmistakable hysterical laughter came down the line and the voice once again said "I'm upstairs with the children, you'd better come up."

Getting rather frightened she called the operator and was advised they would notify the police and, should he phone again, could she keep him talking in order to give them time to trace the call and have him arrested. Minutes after she replaced the receiver the phone rang again and, when the voice said, "I'm upstairs with the children, you'd better come up," she tried to keep him talking. However, he must have guessed what she was trying to do and he put the phone down.

Only seconds later the phone rang again, this time it was the operator who said, "Get out of the house straight away, the man is on the extension." The baby-sitter put down the phone and just then heard someone coming down the stairs. She fled from the house and ran straight into the arms of the police. They burst into the house and found a man brandishing a large butcher's knife. He had entered the house through an upstairs window, murdered both the children and was just about to do the same to the poor baby-sitter.

Spoofing has been around forever, but the primary reason for using your number is because of the popular use of blocking and blacklists, which will prevent such a call from ever ringing your phone.

Who blacklists their own number? No one, that's who. It's a virtual guarantee the call will go through.

Also, many people don't answer calls from unknown numbers, or at least from unknown area codes. If you're like most, that's the number you focus on when the phone is ringing. If the number is from your area code, you're more likely to answer it.

Makes sense. Now I know never to pick up when my number is displayed. I was just curious. Dumb trick really, because it's a one shot wonder. Won't ever do it again.
I did list my number on a "do not call" government site which is supposed to prevent nuisance calls.....ya right. Since then I have received MORE of them!

I can't speak for Canada, but in The US, spoofing is illegal practice for telemarketers.

Those calling illegally are about as likely to respect the "do not call" list as much as an armed robber will shy away from a store with a "no guns" sign posted.

I'm getting telemarketer calls on my work cell now. I answer them and try to keep them on the line for a while, just to F with them and waste their time. I eventually break the news to them that their immediate family is incestuous, or words to that effect.

I was at my friend's John gunshop and the phone rang. He looked at the number, smiled and said "Listen to this"

He answered the phone and said "Could you call me back in about 10 minutes? I'm in the middle of jerking off and I'm about reading to cum"

He put down the phone, smiled and said " they never call back"
