We don't road trip any more. We do one trip/year of ~400 miles, otherwise we fly. And we don't do fast food or chain restaurants - ever.
Last time I left the GREAT STATE OF FLORIDA in a car was over 15 years ago; none planned for the remainder of my life.

My road trips today are TW in Boca (15 miles) and NPB (35 miles), nothing further than that.
Did go to a fine restaurant in downtown FTL last month, that was 20 miles away--took a damn hour.

I do travel to see the wifey's relatives in Tampa area, but those are mandatory.

Living in the upper mid west, this meme I'm posting below reminds me of all
the times during colder months when I was working, I would go into the building and find as many
of the people who had put their wiper blades up because of freezing rain/sleet/snow, and tell them 'Somebody put your wiper blades up, I put them back down' to the
knuckleheads that ran out to check.

Everyone in Rock Port MO could drive a Tesla for free. But at what cost to bald eagles.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_Port,_Missouri

Quote:
The city of Rock Port has become largely energy self-sufficient.[7] In April 2008, Rock Port claimed to be the first community in the United States to have its electricity 100 percent generated by wind power. Rock Port, which uses about 13 million kWh a year, has its power generated by the Loess Hills Wind Farm. The farm has four Suzlon 1.25-megawatt wind turbines. Excess power is sold to the Missouri Public Utility Alliance in Columbia, Missouri.[8] The idea for the wind turbines came from the town's former mortuary worker, Eric Chamberlain.[7] The farm was built by Wind Capital Group and is by far the company's smallest wind farm developed through January 2009. Wind Capital in 2008 built the bigger 50.4MW Cow Branch Wind Farm between Rock Port and Tarkio.

Yes.
I’m going to get a diesel tank and pump. Probably 500 gallons.
I will use the fuel for my pickup and tractor and eventually a diesel UTV, and maybe additional equipment.
Not much in savings but it will be convenient.

Actually, not that uncommon. My wife's father was a farmer in Bakersfield, CA, and had a fuel tank on his property. Kept the pump and hose locked up so it wouldn't get stolen and gas used. He used it on his property for his farming.

Others with lots of land may do this too. My father knows a lot of people in rural Illinois and Indiana who do this as well. Something about that self-sufficiency I guess.

Where I am, I know several (8-10) people who have tanks on their property. Not uncommon at all. Most have diesel and gas, some of my more well-to-do car guy friends even have high octane race gas. I'm talking underground tanks with pumps. The real deal. Not everybody lives on a postage-stamp lot in a cube with bars on the windows.

I never had a large tank but I did keep about 20 - 30 gallons of 112 Octane Leaded Sunoco gas in my garage when I raced the Vette.

I have 5 gallons of Sunoco 110 in my garage right now for the '65 GTO.

The Vette liked Sunoco race fuel the best. I tried VP but the car always ran stronger on Sunoco 112. Only when I ran nitrous, I went with higher octane fuel. Engine only, Sunoco 112 was the best fuel for the Vette. I used to still drive the car to local car shows, so I needed a supply of race fuel at home.
I was at like 13.5:1 compression

I miss the '66 GTO with tri-power I had. I've given some thought to looking for one, but don't have a huge garage now.

I had a vechicle in the 60s that got that kind of millage. It was my well worked on 67 Dodge RT 440Cubes.

I managed to get my hands on a Holly 3 barrel carb. (I worked part time in my friends speed shop) Car also had a 4.10 rear. You could literally watch the gas gauge drop if you were a bit spirited. The 3 barrel did give me a couple 10s better at the strip but it was ridiculous to city drive. Think it was about a 1,000 CFM. Went back to my Carter AfB,

Yes. Self sufficiency is a common thing especially in rural America.

I’m also going to install a whole house LP backup generator.
And although I have muni water I’ll be drilling a well for backup and redundancy.

If I could justify the cost, I’d install a solar field as well. Maybe at a later date I will.

The past couple weeks my wife has come back from her morning walks saying she saw some new test vehicle in the hood. It is not uncommon to see manufacturers vehicles around here disguised with crazy wraps and tape on cardboard panels to disguise the body lines, etc.
Anyway, she spotted it while we were out together, it was the Tesla truck with a flat black wrap. She was "WTF?"
