That should be handed out in every school in the nation. It's about time kids stopped listening to their deluded parent who think THEIR kid is superior to everyone else's.

That's a lot about the sense of entitlement, and not much about who gave them the sense of entitlement.

I mostly had dirt and weeds for a long time.

I may not be the richest guy in the room, but I bet I'm the happiest.

I just had a related conversation with my neighbor about this-

Young people these days haven't had as much exposure to a shit job or a part-time gig after work during their school years so can't appreciate a regular job until they've had a bad one.

That, and grown adults competition into the kinds of work teenagers used to handle.

This turned into my life story but...

I was one of these people when I entered the real world after college. I did work shit jobs before graduating. Two weeks after graduation, I found myself in a cube farm in the DC Metro area working as a "data analyst" which was basically nothing more than glorified data entry. My job was not fulfilling as I was lead to believe a job should and it paid what I considered to be a shitty wage. I started looking for a new job within 6 months.

After 2 years and 1500-2000 resumé submissions, I packed up and took a supervisory job at a poultry slaughter plant in Arkansas since they were the only ones who would hire someone with no real experience. I performed very well there but grew impatient. After 1.5 years there, I also thought that I was entitled to bigger and better things.

I took a job in the Pacific Northwest as a department head at 26. The position was open because people who were really qualified knew better than to take it. I never questioned why they would hire a supervisor with only 1.5 years experience to run/build a department.

The company was in serious trouble. The owner was as crooked as a dog's hind leg and my position in the company would potentially leave me on the hook for the company's legal issues. I walked out of that job after 11 Months. A few years later, a bankruptcy court judge kicked the owner out and appointed a trustee to salvage what they could. At the time they filed for bankruptcy, they owed somewhere between $100 and $500 million.

That's the first time I ever really got an understanding of the real world. Shakespeare wrote "Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown." In order to translate that to the masses, Biggie Smalls said "Mo Money Mo Problems."

After that experience, I took a sizable cut in pay and went back to learn all the things I thought I knew.

These days, my career goals are pretty modest. I work my damnedest to demonstrate my value to my company in hopes that I could hold onto this job until I retire in 35 years or so. That may be an unrealistic goal given that job security is a thing of the past but it certainly keeps things in perspective.

some might look at me and say i was lucky.

those same people didn't see me drag my butt to an office for 8 years doing a boring job, nor traveling for 8 years, rising at 4am, not getting home until midnight (and paid for 8 hours).....

in general, jobs suck, otherwise, they wouldn't have to pay you to do them.

As long as you're young, and you've got your health, what would you want with a job?

Me too. 100% agree.

That being said, I still believe a large % of our generation are still slackers. Just not entitled slackers.

Law enforcement sucks, but I did six years without ever taking a single paycheck.
