Default OK IT/Hardware guys...

How do you recommend that I make backups of this monster?

As you can see from the image, there are 5 secondary drives (internal) in my computer. There's actually a 6th 2TB drive, but it's not hooked up at the moment.

Anywho, this is an astronomical amount of data, on standard SATA drives. The operating system drive c: is ghosted nightly to one of the other drives, but all of these drives will eventually fail.

How would you approach making archives of this system? Especially considering time to archive. As I type this, I'm making a backup of a virtual machine that I use every day (330 GB). That takes about an hour to copy from one drive to another all by itself.

I certainly have a data problem on my hands.

Might be the best solution. Any guess on how long it would take to seed the first backup?

We're talking about 7-8 TB of data. When I hook up the other drive, the system has a max capacity of 12 TB.

Some fine print on their site:

†Operating system and software programs are included in Mirror Image backup, which creates a full-system backup to a local drive.

I use Crashplan and have been happy with the performance.

I backuped almost 2 TB of data initially and add to it.

IIRC they do an initial backup then a differential on subsequent backups.

FYI Carbonite won't recognize attached/external hard drives (last time I checked), Crashplan will.

I knew they did incremental backups after the first "seeding". Have you attempted to recover a file? Better yet, have you ever attempted to recover the operating system to a fresh drive. In my case, the C: drive is twin SSD drives linked in RAID 0.

How long did the initial 2 TB backup take? Is it a snapshot, can you continue to work on the computer during that process?

Of course, I could always keep doing the ghost images.

Never had to recover an OS drive. I don't back it up, just the "data" drive(s).

I haven't tried to recover anything as of yet.

For the OS, I would just image them (Aronis, Ghost, etc...) as that would probably be faster/easier than restoring from a "cloud" backup scenario, IMHO.

Would it be cost effective to build your self a secondary PC that would solely based as a back system???

How long did the initial upload take? I have a pretty fast net connection.

If storage is done to another mechanical drive, that mechanical drive will eventually fail.

I suppose I could also consider building my own RAID storage system with hot-swappable drives.

have a local backup drive, that does hourly backups. also use Carbonite, which as the ad says, runs in the background. however, pretty sure Carbonite does not backup your operating system (as you should have a disk it came on), just your data stuffs (like letters to the editor, pics of cats, Donna Reed songs...).

not sure how long initial backup took, want to say about a day, but that was over cable, and i only have a 500gb drive.

Looks like they do have "premium" plans to do backup the operating systems.

Any added benefit to building your own RAID system versus a company (cost) using it to just back up your data, if you built your own one could create the algorithm to back up the OS? No?

A month or less. IIRC.

I had my system up and running day and night.
