The thing you don't seem to be figuring is that if it takes a week to upload the data to the cloud for backup, if you have a catastrophic failure locally, it'll take a week to down load the backup and recover the lost data.

You won't just lose the data, you'll lose a billable week just getting back up to where you were.

What do major data centers use to back up data?

Exactly. I'm guessing that much data would take him a few weeks to over a month to backup to a cloud. And restoring...yeah...I wouldn't want to do it, epecially if it's client data.

They use lots of different products for different packages. R1Soft, DPM, BackupExec, Acronis, Shadowprotect, FalconStor, Commvault. Of course some simply use rsync, dumps, or open source like Bakula. I work with most of the largest DC's in the world, and their solutions run the gamut. Most are using disk storage now while some of the higher end guys (with huge corporate clients still use tape libraries for long term storage). Any close term or near term needs to be disk storage to be able to access and restore it in a reasonable amount of time.

RAID?

Good point.

That being said, the likelihood of all drives failing at the same time is slim. I already Ghost the operating system drive, and could recover from that pretty quickly. The content of the secondary drives is not being backed up. Recovery of that info would not need to be so rapid.

I do need to move some Ghost images to an offline storage solution as well.

It's not an easy solution, hence why I'm asking.

BTW, CrashPlan is STILL figuring out how much data I have, and it's only at 2.9 TB's. This is local mind you. Sneaking up on 60 minutes.

Uploading that data is a whole 'nother ballgame.

i'm good at spending money...you figure out how to make it.

had a call a few months ago from a former colleague, he had been contacted by Verizon, they had some data center go down...why? uh, loss of cooling water. oops. they were trying to get a ball park for installing backup water storage.

and backup power
and backup batteries
and backup fuel........

oh, and if you put the water in an above ground tank, be sure it won't freeze in winter.....oops.

Think beyond a drive failure - a fire, hurricane, flood or electrical issue can fry them all at the same time.

No one solution is perfect.

Cloud + local = best for most home users and advanced home users.

datawiz, if all the drives took a dump and you needed to get the data from an on-line backup service, would you need ALL the data at once? If not, something like Crashplan could still fill a need for you. If you do need it all at once, then it very likely will not.

redundancy and diversity.

if your idea is worth 8 figgers, protecting it is worth at least 6 figgers.

As you can see from the image, there are 5 secondary drives (internal) in my computer. There's actually a 6th 2TB drive, but it's not hooked up at the moment.

Anywho, this is an astronomical amount of data, on standard SATA drives. The operating system drive c: is ghosted nightly to one of the other drives, but all of these drives will eventually fail.

How would you approach making archives of this system? Especially considering time to archive. As I type this, I'm making a backup of a virtual machine that I use every day (330 GB). That takes about an hour to copy from one drive to another all by itself.

I certainly have a data problem on my hands.
Yer gonna need more floppies.

The real question is out of 12TB (or 8ish) of data, how much of it changes very often?

If it's changing frequently, then it'll require a lot of backing up.

If not, push most off on some media and be done.

Also how much are you willing to spend to back it up? How important?

Looks like you can do tape for $5k ish. Or I seen a drive array that will do up 32TB for $1k plus the cost of drives.

OK, now this is seriously funny....

I'm trying a demo of CrashPlan per a recommendation from here. The analysis of my machine had over 10 million files in 6 TB's of data.

Anyone have a guess how long it's currently estimating it will take to complete the backup?

I have no personal experience with it, but I've heard good things said about this:

Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3)

It might be worth checking out.
