Default Neighbor stealing my stuff

So my wife says somebody stole my rock. I say "HUH? Your rock?" She said she had a big rock by a tree in the front yard she was planning to use for some landscaping and somebody made off with it.

So she asked the pain in the ass neighbors if their damn kids had anything to do with it. The hillbilly dad comes over acting very polite and says, yes, his kid was involved. The kid helped a different neighbor lift the rock and steal it.

I'm thinking "that is total B.S. Said neighbor would know better. He's a friggin adult.".

So I check the video surveillance. Sure as shit. This guy comes over with a hand truck and makes off with the rock. WTF?

It's just a rock, I know. However, it is the principle. This guy came onto my property when I wasn't home and stole my shit.

I'm trying to decide what to do. Call the cops? I hate to waste their time on such a stupid thing. But at the same time, it's theft.

What's next? Maybe he likes my bushes or my solar lights?

Go ask for the rock back, if he grouses, show him the tape. Still won't give the rock back? Post the tape on YouTube and send him the link.

Yes. If possible, burn the video footage to a DVD you can hand to the officer. With all the trouble you've had with your neighbors, I'd document everything.

Interestingly enough this has happened to me, back when we were building our home. The house was almost finished and there were some big (2-4 ton at least) rocks in one corner of our yard. The builder wanted to charge me $$$ to haul them off. I said hell no, I'm using them for landscaping, even if I have to break them up some. They pushed them around where I wanted them approximately and a few days later I noticed the biggest one was missing. The builder said he didn't take it, he would have charged me to take it. So somebody stole a rock approximately the size of a VW Beetle.

Put a value of $1000 on that rock and then have a warrant made out or his arrest.

On one level, that's hilarious. On another level, it's another reminder how many scumbags are out there breathing. I would suspect the landscaper was going to charge you to haul it away and stole it when you declined.

Had the opposite happen. We were away and in the middle of the night, a dump truck deposited 4 enormous boulders on the edge of our property. Asked the neighbors and they didn't know anything about it, thought we had them delivered. Apparently they thought it was normal to have a rock body truck show up at 2 am to make a delivery.

no one... takes something from my property and gets away with it.

As soon as your neighbor said that his kid(s) were involved; I would of just said calmly - but matter of factly "have them return it within 24 hours"... and then I'd walk away.

At 24 hours and one minute... AND NOT ONE MINUTE LONGER... if the item is not back, I'd call the police and report a theft. And yes, I would make the call.

Seems you might be worried whether a neighbor will "like you" or not; but for me - I don't give a ratz azz what my neighbors think of me. I'm not trying to gain a membership in a social club or anything.

Best thing my neighbors can do is to gossip to each other: "might want to keep the kids out of his yard; he's a __________ (jerk, azzhole, prick; exact word not important) and will report anything to the cops."

To me, being "neighborly" means to respect property lines and noise ordinances. And nothing about needing to be popular/liked.

Just another reason I'm looking into getting a home surveillance system. I haven't had any issues and I'd like to keep it that way.

Actually the rock stealer is a frikin optometrist. Across the street from the hillbillies is a husband and wife professor duo (University of TX). Next to hillbillies is a surgeon. On the other side of me are two (count 'em) cops.

I'd love to get out of this house. The 'hood ain't bad. The house sucks. Only a matter of time. I'm too busy launching a business to move now. Eventually my wife and I will build a steel and glass house. But for now, we dance with what we brung.

I open carry on my property all the time. I.e., I walk around with my handle hanging out.

Total lack of respect on your neighbors part.
Make him haul it back.

Honestly, I'm stunned by the audacity. I'm waiting for him to get home. I will keep it very simple:

"You have 1 hour to replace my rock or the shit is going to hit the fan. And if I see you on my property again, I will assume it is for nefarious purposes and I will react accordingly."

My German Shepherd can reach the edge of my yard in under 2 seconds. I wonder if Mr. Rock Stealer can move that fast.
